Farewell is the ninth and final subchapter of Chapter 9: Farewell in Celeste. The subchapter is composed of an enormous single room that the player is tasked to complete from beginning to end with no respawn points, having several sections and requiring mastery of jellyfish mechanics. When the end of the room is reached, Madeline will be launched up to the clouds and meet the Old Woman as they have one last exchange before her departure. Madeline then wakes up from her dream and has a video chat with Theo, who eventually shares a photo of his grandfather together with Granny when they were younger by Celeste mountain. There is a secret strawberry located in this subchapter known as the Moon Berry, accessible through a path requiring the obstacles littered across the main room to reach. If the end of the chapter is reached with a Golden Strawberry, then one final room will appear before the berry can be claimed and the chapter completed.

Gameplay[]

At the start of the subchapter, Badeline will pop out and note that this is the end and Madeline will get ready to finish this for Granny as the two of them combine again. This subchapter will not be easy, as it will put forward one final room which can last around two minutes to complete from start to finish, meaning that gathering muscle memory and knowledge of precisely what to do is integral for completion. If the player dies in this room 50 times in a row, Madeline will stop and sit down on the next respawn, noting that it feels impossible despite being so close. Badeline will reassure her that she can do it, and the player can continue with their attempts. This room will take the player to the right until a wall of electricity is met with the Bird on the other side, causing them to need to travel up and down around it using the wind and a jellyfish, then continuing right again to destroy the utility vault and getting launched with the Bird and purple orbs to eventually reach a straight upward path using a feather, leading to the last purple orb, at which point Badeline asks for Madeline to say goodbye to her (Granny) before flinging her through the crystals above and into the first of the ending cutscenes.

Strategies[]

As the main room of this subchapter is so gigantic, it has been colloquially divided into five sections composing of different kinds of challenges. There will be skull binoculars available to preview the room, but they won't be able to move the view up, meaning that the third and fourth sections of the room will have to be done blind.

Start by dashing up-right into the first jellyfish, using that momentum to get to the right side of the first pufferfish and then blast yourself to the right with it while holding onto the jellyfish. After traveling for a bit, throw the jellyfish and dash up-right into it and re-grab it, boosting yourself over the next pufferfish, then blast yourself to the right with it. Do this technique again, then wait until you can throw the jellyfish to the right such that it would not hit the platform above but would also be the right height to allow you to fall and blast to the right with the next pufferfish and dash straight up and re-grab the jellyfish as it passes. After this, move to the right carefully and avoid the barrier from the top. Descend until you can move right a bit to bounce on the spring and move a bit more to the right to avoid the barrier above once again. After the bounce, throw the jellyfish to the right, fall, and dash straight right into the purple orb. After being tossed upward and falling back down, you will be aligned to dash up-right and re-grab the jellyfish to get perfectly over the electricity below and dodge the electricity above. Keep going right until you can bounce on a spring, then move a bit to the right and throw the jellyfish to the left so that it will bounce to the right off of the spring above. You'll be able to fall onto the Bird after this happens and it will fling you past two barriers. Dash up-right after the fling to be able to bounce on a spring on top of a falling platform. After you bounce, move back left a bit and by this time the jellyfish from earlier will reach your area and you can dash up-right and re-grab it to get further to the right past the electricity. Bounce on one more spring and continue right past the barrier and dash up-right to reach the Bird.

After this fling, you'll be able to use the momentum to get even further right by dashing up-right into a stationary jellyfish floating in the area to the right. Wind will start to blow slightly to the right at this point, and you'll reach a dash crystal. Collect it, then move back left a bit to allow yourself the space needed to throw the jellyfish right and dash up-right to re-grab it and boost yourself over the next wall of electricity. Fall down the next area while nudging yourself left a bit to ensure the wind does not push you into electricity. You will have collected a double dash crystal, which you will need to use for the next area in which you will have to throw the jellyfish to the right and allow it to bounce on one of the springs to the right, while in the meantime you can stall by dashing straight up twice and then moving left to bounce to the right off of a spring. After you are bounced to the right, you should be able to dash up-right and re-grab the jellyfish. Continue right, collecting the dash crystal along the way, and throw the jellyfish to the right and quickly dash into it and re-grab it so you can get enough height such that you won't fall to the bottom of the screen too soon.

When you get far enough to the right, the wind will stop blowing to the right and instead start blowing upward, which causes Madeline to rise up slowly in the air if she is holding a jellyfish. It should be noted that in this state, holding down will cause Madeline to descend faster than the wind blows, and holding up will accelerate the speed she goes up at slightly. Move to the right and left to dodge electricity above, then move right and hold down to get under the electricity above and rise to the next area. Some small balls of electricity will be moving left and right in your path very slowly, so you can patiently wait until the time is right to move to the left and possibly hold down if needed to get around them and rise further up on the left. The next area will show three starblades moving in circles at the same pace in a fairly open area, and it should be simple to move right while near the bottom of the open area while each starblade is passing the top side of its path. After getting past this, the area above will have pufferfishes present which will be able to launch you right into the electricity on the sides if you touch their blasting range. Move carefully to the left and right as you rise here, making sure to watch Madeline's hitbox and ignoring the jellyfish's, as only Madeline's hitbox will activate the pufferfish explosion. There will be an area to land above, but the way to proceed is blocked by a key-activated platform. The key token to open the area up and be found by moving right and rising into the small gap in the electricity above. The key token is in the distance and completely surrounded by electricity, however it can be collected by waiting until just before reaching the top of the tunnel to throw the jellyfish to the right, and the wind will blow it right into the key token and collect it for you. You'll start falling down and the key-activated platform will move itself, so move left a bit and continue falling.

You will collect a double dash crystal, then immediately need to use the dashes as you fall. Simply dash while facing right, fall further, turn around and dash left, then grab and slide down the moon block to the left to collect a dash crystal. Dash to the right and bounce on the nearby pufferfish, causing it to fall down. Move right and fall into the right side of that pufferfish to be launched to the right. Do a dash straight upward from this launch to touch the nearby feather, then take it down and left, then down and right and then dash straight right and grab the falling platform to the right. After it lands, you can jump to the left and bounce on a spring, then move right to bounce to the left on another spring. From there, dash right into the higher of the two remaining falling platforms containing springs to bounce to the left, then fall a bit before dashing straight left and onto a falling platform.

Stand still as the falling platform falls, watching and waiting to be able to jump to the right and dash up-right and grab a jellyfish. Move right with this jellyfish until you can descend into a spring that will bounce you to the right. You'll pass by a barrier during the duration of the momentum, causing the jellyfish you hold to vanish. At that point, prepare to dash up-right and grab another jellyfish. Fall down until you can touch the right side of the pufferfish below and blast yourself right, passing through another barrier. You'll need to dash and grab another jellyfish, which will shortly after vanish in the next barrier, but you will collect a dash crystal to allow yourself to do this again to another nearby jellyfish on the right. Then, you'll need to do this one more time. There will be one last jellyfish to dash into and grab, which will allow you you to reach a spring that will bounce you to the right. Go as far to the right as possible and you should be barely able to dash up-right and grab the utility vault. Climb up on top of it, then dash straight down into it twice to destroy it, then dash into the Bird. From here, you've completed all the challenges and all that remains is a victory lap. You'll be repeatedly flung by the Bird into a purple orb, which will launch you into the Bird again, then you'll be flung again, until eventually a purple orb will lead you into a feather. Hold straight up, collecting another feather as you go, and dash straight up one last time after popping out of the feather to reach the last purple orb, which will cause Badeline to say one last line before you've been tossed to the end of the subchapter, the chapter, and the entire game.

Moon Berry[]

The secret Moon Berry can be found in this subchapter, but you first much reach the very end when you get to the utility vault. You may have noticed along the way that various platforms were located inside the electricity obstacles in this room. After destroying the utility vault, move to the left and dash up-left and you can reach a small moon block. All of the platforms previously within the electricity can now be used for platforming and are needed to make it up to where the Moon Berry is located. Jump to the left and dash up-left to get on another moon block. Jump left and dash up-left again to collect and dash crystal and be able to land on another moon block. From here, prepare to jump to the right and dash straight up twice (using the refresh of the dash crystal) to climb onto another moon block. Do a wavedash to the left from there and dash up-left. There will be a spring on the next moon block reached, so jump onto it. Move to the left from a bounce such that you can do a wall bounce off the left side of one of the moon blocks above, allowing you to reach another moon block with a spring. Bounce right and dash up into the next spring, then dash up-right and climb up into another spring, then dash up-left and climb one more moon block. Jump over it to the left side where another spring can be used. After bouncing to the left, dash up-left and climb on another moon block, then jump over it to the left and onto the attached bridge. Make your way left across two moon blocks, then you'll need to do a wavedash to the left to reach the next one followed by an up-left dash. There will be a few moon blocks present in the next area, but make your way to the top-left one. From there, jump right and dash straight up into the pufferfish's range to be blasted right. Shortly after this, do another dash straight up into another pufferfish, allowing you to be blasted again to the right and climb onto a larger moon block. Make your way up a few more moon blocks until you are near the key-activated platform from earlier. You can simply jump and dash to the right and climb onto the next moon block, then get up onto another moon block where your thrown jellyfish from earlier can be found. Grab it and use it to get to the right between the spikes on moon blocks above and below, then you can either bring the jellyfish along to make it to the right or throw it off to the side and just dash across. Regardless, you'll be able to discard the jellyfish once you make it to a large moon block you'll reach which also serves as a respawn point.

Bounce on the nearby spring and dash straight up to reach the first of the double dash crystals, then dash straight up twice and reach some more double dash crystals, then dash straight up twice again and land on a moon block above. Jump and dash up-left to another moon block, then wall bounce to the right off the moon block above's right side so that you can climb onto another. Jump and dash straight up into more double dash crystals, then dash straight up twice with a slightly nudge to the left inbetween each dash to barely grab onto another moon block. Jump to the right and dash up-right to grab the left side of a moon block, then jump over to its right side and slide down so that you can reach another double dash crystal. Climb up again, then jump left and dash up-left twice to reach a bridge on another moon block. Jump to the right and wall bounce up, grabbing a moon block to the right. Wall jump back left and right again, then jump over the highest of the moon blocks and grab the right side. You can then jump right into the next double dash crystal and immediately dash up-left twice to grab another moon block. Quickly climb it and jump over it to wall jump to the other nearby moon block. Jump over to this moon block's left side and slide down to reach the last double dash crystals, then jump back to the right side and use the dashes to dash up-right twice and be able to climb onto the last moon block directly below a shining room transition. That you can jump and dash up and climb through.

There will not be much to see in the room you arrive in, just a single crystal and a spring with a right transition you can't reach in any way. There is also a room above to be reached, although there is absolutely nothing there either except a down transition to a secret passage back into the room you were just in. The way to progress is actually to die, as this will mysteriously cause you to respawn in the top-right area of the room away from where you just were. This can be done by either directly hitting the crystal, retrying in the lower room, or save and quitting and returning to the game. Regardless of what you choose, you'll gain access to the last room and the location of the Moon Berry.

This room has some skull binoculars available to preview the room, if needed, but they will not be able to view past the point where wind appears. This room will heavily focus on the jellyvator technique as most of the walls present are ice walls which means that only boosting yourself up with the jellyfish at the start will be possible. It will start off simple, you can just dash straight up and grab the jellyfish along the way, then throw the jellyfish and jellyvator up by dash straight up and re-grabbing it after it bounces off the wall to get up higher. Turn to the left and do this again, then move right. Do another jellyvator off the right ice wall in the area above and you can collect a double dash crystal. After this happens, move left and do a jellyvator off the left side's ice wall. Move a bit closer to the crystals on the left and fall a bit, then do a more unique jellyvator by throwing the jellyfish into the springs behind the crystals and re-grabbing it after it bounces to the right. Take it to the left and bounce to the right off of the next set of springs while holding no inputs. Fall for a bit, then throw the jellyfish and dash up-right to re-grab it and reach springs on the right side. You'll reach another ice wall in the middle of the room, so wall jump to the right to get some distance from it and come back to jellyvator up and travel right into the springs which will bounce you left, though make sure you hold no inputs when this happens. Fall down a bit and then fall to the left, then do another jellyvator. Move to the left to bounce off some springs to the right, which will allow you to then throw your jellyfish and dash up-right to re-grab it and reach more springs on the right side which will bounce you back left. Align another jellyvator by tossing the jellyfish into the springs to the left and boosting up to land on the nearby disappearing platform. Jump to the right with the jellyfish in hand to land on another disappearing platform, then do a wall jump off the ice wall to get to the last disappearing platform, then jump left again to reach a spring. After your bounce, throw the jellyfish right and dash up-right to re-grab it, then prepare a safe descent before throwing the jellyfish to the right and grabbing the right side of the nearby moon block. Hold onto it as the jellyfish falls down to the springs surrounded by crystals. When this happens, jump right to collect the double dash crystal and dash straight up and up-right to re-grab the jellyfish and reach an ice wall. Wall jump left to reach one more disappearing platform, then jump left again and prepare to do another jellyvator (though be sure to wait a bit so you don't get boosted too high and hit the crystals above). Move right to land on a platform to the right, then jump right and throw the jellyfish to the left and dash up-left into it to get a boost to the area above and collect a dash crystal. From there, throw the jellyfish right and dash and re-grab it to reach another dash crystal, then do this again to the left one more time.

In the next area, wind will be blowing up which functions just like it did in the main room of this subchapter. Rise up and collect a double dash crystal, then rise more and prepare to move left and rise to the designated gap in the electricity. Throw the jellyfish to the right here and it will collect the key token, then you'll fall and be able to dash straight right and up-right to reach another double dash crystal. Then, dash straight up twice (though not too quickly) and you'll be able to grab the jellyfish again. Rise up with the jellyfish for a bit and collect another double dash crystal, then the next area will be available. To the right is an open tunnel that you can go through to preview the area to the left which is the path to the end. What you must do here is throw the jellyfish to the left while under the small designated gap in the electricity to the left, then fall and dash straight right and straight up to collect another double dash crystal. Dash straight up and straight left with the two dashes to reach another double dash crystal and in the meantime the jellyfish will have bounced from the left side's springs to the right side's springs and will start traveling back left. Dash straight up twice while moving left a bit to reach the last dash crystal, and you will be aligned to grab the jellyfish as it passes and hold onto it as you rise up. There will be a barrier on both sides, but you can save the jellyfish by going back and collecting a double dash crystal, then going up and throwing it into the area below the central moon block. In any case, the Moon Berry can be seen right above and by touching it and landing, you'll collect it and be met with a special jingle as well as text saying "WOW". Above is a purple orb which will finish the chapter just the same as the normal ending would.

Golden Strawberry Room[]

When the end of the chapter is reached while holding the Golden Strawberry (either normal ending or Moon Berry ending), you'll be taken to a final room before actually being able to finish. Dying in this room will force you to go back to the very beginning of the chapter, so it is important to be prepared for it. By enabling debug mode, you can reach this room without needing the Golden Strawberry and practice for it. The room has many skull binoculars throughout it that can be used to preview the room, if needed, and it ultimately won't be too much of a challenge and is unlikely to threaten a Golden Strawberry run if you've practiced.

To start, do a wall bounce off the ice wall to the left and get to the upper area. Make your way to the right, then walk off the bridge and fall down, then dash up-left to grab the jellyfish and take it over to the starting area. It is also possible to do a wavedash to the right and then a dash into the double dash crystals, followed by a straight up and up-left dash to grab the jellyfish. Take the jellyfish and jellyvator up to the next section and jump on the spring with it. Blast to the left from the pufferfish above until you can bounce back right from the spring you arrive at. After the bounce, throw the jellyfish and dash up-right into it and re-grab it to blast from another pufferfish. You'll then blast left to another pufferfish which will launch you back right, but throw the jellyfish left and dash up-left to get back and blast off the pufferfish above to the right. Do a jellyvator here to reach a double dash crystal, then move left and throw the jellyfish and dash up-left to re-grab it and reach safe ground. Jellyvator up to the next section, then walk to the right a bit. Jump and throw the jellyfish to the right to let it bounce off the springs, then prepare to dash straight up into it and boost yourself up with the re-grab. Land on the nearby platform, then jump and throw the jellyfish left and prepare to jump right and dash straight up to re-grab it and get one last necessary boost. After that, there are just some springs to bounce across until you can go left and pass a barrier to then dash into the left wall and climb it. There will be a small, green flag that sprays out confetti and plays the same jingle as completing Celeste on the Pico-8 when approached. Above it is a purple orb which will take you right to the first end cutscene.
